The Professor is laughing hysterically at her own joke. One time her friend Penny checked in with her husband to a hotel in Paris, and their friend John came looking for them.
“Is their any record of someone named Penny and her husband checking in?”
“Yes, Penny checked in half an hour ago, but her husband hasn’t arrived yet.”
“That’s impossible. Are you sure? They always travel together.”
“Yes, it says here in the registry, just Penny and her puppy.”
Penny doesn’t have a puppy. So John took a look in the registry. Penny and Chien.
Chien is Penny’s Asian husband’s first name. It’s also French for “dog”.
The Professor is gasping for air. Tears stream down her cheeks.
“Hahaha! Penny and Chien! The more you think about it, the funnier it gets! Ah ha, ah ha ha ha, ah ha ha haaaaaaa…”
Her sprite-like laugh rings through the car. They say that genius is growing up without losing your childhood senses of wonderment and joy. I take a look at the Professor. Genius? It’s hard to tell when she’s balled up and snorting.
At the very least, it’s the essence of charm.
